Stage 5 - Pewsey, via the White Horse, to Upavon

7.1 miles

The route is mainly along Bridleways and Byways which are 'open to traffic'.

Route - (Select Satelite view) and a virtual run using photos

This route starts in Pewsey at the North end of Ball Road near the crossroads with it, High Street, Milton Road and Hollybush Lane and passes by the Pewsey White Horse (with the climb to the hill figure itself) and then continues South West along the Everleigh Road before turning due South along byways and footpaths to Upavon.

Car Parking. There is no recommended parking place at the start of this stage but it should be possible to park in any of the nearby streets. Don't park on any of the double yellow lines.

The start of this stage is in Ball Road, Pewsey. - SU 168 603

At the end of the road (at Southcott) you will see a bridge ahead. Follow the road to the right into Green Drove. At the next junction turn left. You can see the White Horse in front of you.

Those who have run the Terminator will recognize this spot.

At this time of the year farmers are busy haymaking.

Continue straight ahead and up the hill to the White Horse.

Cross the stile in front of you and follow the little path at the edge of the field to the next stile.

Take extreme care joining the road (the Everleigh Road) and obey the marshals' instructions.

Turn left.

Run along the road, over the brow of the hill, past a footpath sign on the left and a turning on the right.

Cross the road when advised that it is safe by a marshal. Turn right along the gravel track and continue as it becomes more grassy, past the fields of pigs on the left. Pass over another track and continue straight ahead until you come to a junction.

Bear right. If you continue too far you will see a sign Byway. Turn right.

Follow the tracks which soon pass between some bushes. The tracks bear slightly left. Continue until you come to a major road (the A342). Just before this road, turn right and follow the grassy track (not the unmade road which runs parallel to it).

Continue in a straight line (on a ridge). You will pass, on your right, a derelict tower, and on your left a military village. Keep going straight on. Soon you come to a golf course. Still you continue in a straight line along the track.

Just as the track begins to descend a little you turn left on to a grassy track. Should you go too far you will see a sign on your right which says NO THROUGHFARE - PRIVATE ROAD. (Have a look at the photos on the virtual run)

The route you should be following is a grassy track between two hedges which begins to go downhill to a gate. Go through this gate and continue along the pathway. There may be sheep in the field to your right.

(Some of you may have noticed that the farmer had made a deviation of the route here, however this has now been put back to normal.)

The track begins to get a bit overgrown, nevertheless continue to follow it until you come to an unmade road and a building in front of you. Turn left and follow this. It turns into a tarmac road. Soon you will reach the main road (A342, the Andover Road)

Turn right and run along the footpath until you reach the main crossroads at the garage and the finish of this stage.

You are now in Upavon.

To get to the start of the next stage, and the recommended parking area, walk up the Devizes Road until you reach the A342.
